Calculating an Empirical Formula from Reaction Data
- To find the mass of oxygen, subtract the mass of titanium from the mass of the “metal oxide.”
The difference is the mass of oxygen.
Mass Ti = 3.24 g Ti
Mass O = Mass oxide – Mass titanium
= 5.40 g Ti and O – 3.24 g Ti
= 2.16 g O
- Now you can convert the mass of each element to moles.
