Buffering: How does it work?
- suppose a buffer contains relatively large amounts of a weak acid, HA, and its conjugate base, A-.
- when OH- is added to the solution, it reacts with the HA and the following reaction occurs:
- OH- + HA A- + H2O
- the net result is that OH- ions are not allowed to accumulate but are replaced by A- ions.
