Consider the following rx with acetic acid and acetate:
- 1) CH3COO- (s) + H+ (l) CH3COOH (aq)
- If H+ are added, they will combine with the CH3COO(aq)- so there will not be any extra H+ to change the pH.
- 2) CH3COOH (aq) + OH- (aq) H2O (l) + CH3COO- (aq)
- If OH- is added, they will combine with the CH3COOH to make acetate ions so there will not be any extra OH- to change the pH.
